PETE HARRIS

CONSTANT BROWSER: This is the time of year when an inveterate book nut
like me has a tendency to become slightly unhinged. Because this is the time
of year when the book publishers wheel up the heavy artillery and let fly with
a continuous barrage of choice items aimed at the Christmas trade. The rest of
the year it's routine literary shelling and sniping, with the occasional block-
buster thrown in for good measure, but along about November, it's time for me
to clamp on the old steel helmet and crawl into the nearest foxhole (lined with
old pulp magazines) till the shooting has subsided.

I still wander through the bookstores, eyes bugging, heart leaping at the
sight of every new arrival. But, I force myself to resist every impulse to buy,
because I know that if I ever started, they'd soon be coming for the deed to
the ranch,

One reason I find it relatively easy to resist buying books at this time of
year is the fact that the stores are full of desperate gift buyers, bless ‘em, who
never set foot in them the other 11 months of the year, I don't want any of my
friends who run bookstores to get the wrong idea. I'll be back, believe me,
when the crush is over and things have returned to normal, In the meantime,
good luck, I hope you sell a million, And, I'll be seeing you in January, along
about remainder time,

THE COMIC OBSERVER: We recently asked Jethro Dumont, resident comics
expert, for a review of ABC--TV's movie version of Wonder Woman, This is
his report: “Well, what can I tell you? Lynda Carter was a somewhat larger-
than-life but nonetheless reasonable facsimile of the original comic book
Wonder Woman with, uh, a couple of notable exceptions, Miss Carter, I
understand, was Miss U.S.A. of 1973 and statuesque is the word that springs to
mind to describe her physical presents, uh, presence. As for her acting ability,
her projections were, uh, projection was something to hold... behold.

“Now, as far as the plot of the movie was concerned, it definitely was, uh,
ah, built (she certainly was)...no, no, uh, constructed to entertain and arouse,
no, amuse, amuse viewers who wanted to escape from the, uh, flat, routine,
humdrum life around them into a world of excitement where they can
vicariously have an arousing, uh, rousing good time watching Lynda Carter
breasting the waves of adversity in her WW costume. She also has nice eyes.
Now, who else was in the movie? Oh yes, there was a well-rounded, uh,
versatile chest, uh, cast who made a lasting impression with their vivid per-
formances but whose names I didn't catch, Did 1 mention that Lynda Carter
outpointed everyone else in the picture on sheer ability alone. Well, she did,
she certainly did, and she certainly was..."

(Editor‘s Note: Mr. Dumont, at this point, had to be forcibly removed from
his quill and placed in a cool, dark room to recover from his first outing as a
movie reviewer, )
